PVAEC announces new online course - Python 3.0

PVAEC offers new online course - Advanced Web Pages

PVAEC has a program that makes it easy to take high-quality, noncredit online courses. We have partnered with ed2go to offer hundreds of online, instructor-led courses and are pleased to announce the launch of "Advanced Web Pages."

Participants will master advanced Web design skills as they create Web pages using CSS and HTML (including new HTML5 elements). They'll learn how to add interactivity and animation to their sites, and how to create pages that work in any environment from a desktop computer to a mobile device.

This course is part of PVAEC's growing catalog of more than 300 instructor-facilitated online courses. Through well-crafted lessons, expert online instruction, and interaction with fellow students, participants in these courses gain valuable knowledge at their convenience. They have the flexibility to study at their own pace combined with enough structure and support to complete the course. And they can access the classroom 24/7 from anywhere with an Internet connection.

New sessions of each course run every month. They last six weeks, with two new lessons being released weekly (for a total of 12). Seasonal farmworkers and loggers can earn a stipend while getting a GED!

We are looking for migrant and seasonal farmworkers and loggers who are trying to earn their GED. Through the Maine HEP grant you can be provided with:

Transportation & childcare reimbursement
Links to health and social services
A stipend of $100/week to cover personal expenses while attending GED classes
Books and school supplies

We’re looking for people who have done at least 75 days of farm or logging work over the last 24 months. Examples of qualifying farm work are blueberries, potatoes, dairy, poultry, tipping and logging. For logging, qualifying work includes: planting, trimming, de-limbing, and harvesting. As long as it’s not processing (working in a paper mill, chipping factory etc) it counts!

Immediate family members of the seasonal worker can participate. This includes: a spouse, a parent, step-parent, adoptive parent, foster parent, or anyone with guardianship, any person who claims the individual as a dependent on a Federal income tax return for either of the previous two years, or resides in the same household as the individual, supports that individual financially, and is a relative of that individual.

Please don’t hesitate to call to see if an activity counts. Anyone who qualifies for Migrant Education Programs and people who participate in the National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP) are automatically eligible.

Adult Literacy Programs are an Investment in the Future

September 12, 2011, Dover-Foxcroft.ME. – Piscataquis Valley Adult Education Cooperative (Guilford, Milo, Dexter, Dover-Foxcroft and all the surrounding towns) is part of a national network of organizations offering literacy programs to educate adults and help fight growing national unemployment.

Beginning September 12, the United States will commemorate the third annual National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. According to ProLiteracy, the oldest and largest organization of adult literacy and basic education programs in the nation, more than 30 million adults in the U.S. lack the most basic literacy skills and 15 percent of Americans without a diploma don’t have jobs. ProLiteracy provides almost 1,000 community-based literacy organizations, including PVAEC, with tools to help educate adult learners and help them meet the demands of today’s workforce.

“Adult Education and Family Literacy Week recognizes the critical role of education in helping our local residents reach their full potential,” said Thelma Regan, Director, PVAEC. “Literacy helps families be healthier, support themselves through work and contribute more fully to the community.”

“Low literacy costs the nation more than two hundred billion dollars each year in lost productivity, as well as an additional one to two billion in health and safety issues,” said David C. Harvey, president and CEO of ProLiteracy. “Every dollar spent on adult literacy and education provides returns to the country through higher employment, added tax revenues, reduced welfare payments and less crime.”

PVAEC holds Graduation Ceremony June 15, 2011

PVAEC held its graduation ceremony on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at the Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft. A full house came to support and celebrate our graduates' accomplishments. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony.

Our keynote speaker was Ray Therrien from Mt Blue Adult & Community Education in Franklin County. Ray spoke of the new opportunities awaiting each graduate and reminded us to accept new challenges that help us grow and reach our potential.

Graduates are ready to turn their tassels as the symbolic act that this phase of their education is complete and they are ready for what' next - employment, college or post-secondary training.

PVAEC Unveils New Computer Lab

PVAEC is thrilled to announce the opening of its new computer lab!

Our first class was Basic Desktop, and it was full. The students enjoyed the re-freshed room, the new chairs and tables, and most of all the new computers. Our new Lenovo's are equipped with Windows 7 and Office 10.

We have many classes to offer in this new lab. We will be running many sessions of the Basic Desktop class, as well as Website Creation, PhotoShop, and Electronic Scrapbooking,and much more! So browse the website to see what's to your liking. Or, call 564-6525 for more information.

We have two Open Lab times for students to come in and use the computers, or ask the instructor about a particular problem they are running into. The Open Lab times are Mondays from 1 - 2 pm and Fridays from 1 - 4 pm.

Our particular thanks go to Doug Ware, our Computer Instructor, for the time and energy he gave to this project. We would not be up and running without him!

PVAEC Holds 2010 Graduation Ceremony

PVAEC celebrated with students, families and staff during its graduation ceremony at Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft on May 26, 2010.

PVAEC (Piscataquis Valley Adult Education Cooperative) had 48 students earn either their high school diploma or their GED since last year's graduation ceremony.

This year's program began with an introduction by Thelma Regan, Director of PVAEC.

The keynote speaker was Joanna Russell, Director of Tri-County Workforce Investment Board. Joanna's motivational speech began by noting that she took Adult Education refresher courses when she was in her thirties to start her on the path to her MBA.

The student speaker this year was Benjamin Richardson. Ben's moving speech spoke of his journey from the depths of drug and alcohol abuse after the death of his father to earning his GED and being accepted as a freshman at Eastern Maine Community College.

The musical interlude was provided by Susan Ramsey and Ruth Fogg, North Country Strings Duo.

Daniel Smith was awarded his honor cord for achieving his high GED Score. The cord and certificate were awarded by Eve Salley, Chief GED Examiner and Pam Flanagan, GED Examiner.

The presentation of the diplomas was handled by Paul Stearns, RSU 80 Superintendent and Thelma Regan. Then the graduates turned their tassels and exited the theater.

PVAEC Holds Arts/Crafts Exhibition

PVAEC held its second Art and Crafts Exhibition on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the Morton Ave Municipal Complex in Dover-Foxcroft.

Our community members had the chance to tour our facility and at the same time to view the work of our art instructors and their students. There were painting and drawing exhibits as well as knitting. It was a great opportunity to see what can be created by taking an adult education Arts and Crafts class.
